Margaret on the Move: Planning Ahead, Living Fully

By Jon Moskin

Margaret, a Frank resident, is healthy, robust, and, as any brief conversation will instantly reveal, in possession of a quick wit and the mental acuity of a tournament chess player. She’s so vibrant that one can’t help but wonder why she chose to move into an assisted living environment.

“I think it helps to think ahead,” Margaret said. “I was living in Walnut Creek for 14 years, but my place was undergoing a lot of construction, which meant walkways were closed, jobs were half done, and it was becoming clear that it was time to go. So, my children started researching because I didn’t have the energy to check where else I should live.” Her children did some research and found the Frank Residences.

“I was absolutely convinced that it was the place for me. And I didn’t want to wait until I had some sort of accident or illness that required a move. So, the timing was just right, and I am so glad I came.” – Margaret

Margaret, a 79-year-old retired school librarian, has jumped into life at the Frank Residences with an open mind and infectious enthusiasm.

“There are socializing opportunities everywhere I go,” she said. “A lot more than I’ve been able to discover. But I’ve participated in current events discussion groups, which have been fascinating. I have enjoyed the movies a lot. And I’ve been able to explore and try different things to do almost every day.” Moreover, Margaret has been a regular (or semi-regular) at the gym where, beyond the treadmill, she has participated in yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong. “Plus, I run into people just by walking around outside where there are gardens and paths and people with cats and dogs. And, of course, anyone who eats in the dining room is going to meet a lot of people.”

It’s not just that Margaret is a people person. Part of the appeal of the campus, she says, has been the caliber of the residents she has met and befriended.

“The people who live here are among the most intelligent and professional I have ever been around. There are doctors, lawyers, social workers… People who have had long illustrious careers, so it’s wonderful to be able to talk with them not just about the world but about their own history. “In fact, that’s one of the discussions that’s scheduled today… And I’m really looking forward to it.”  – Margaret

Margaret’s enthusiasm for new opportunities to explore is palpable but, so far, what she seems to love most about the Frank Residences and the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living beyond the staff and the residents is the following:

Not cooking.

“That’s the best part. I have a wonderful studio with a full kitchen, but I don’t intend to use it,” she said with a laugh. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s just additional counter space.”

Though Margaret’s journey is just beginning, it is abundantly clear that her good humor, great attitude, and willingness to grow will be a blessing to our entire community.
